When to visit Turkmenistan: a season-by-season guide

Turkmenistan is four-fifths desert, and the desert sets the calendar. The country is comfortable for roughly half the year and demanding for the rest. Here is how each season actually behaves — and what it does to an itinerary.

Spring — April to early June

The best season, and no serious argument against it. Days are warm rather than hot, the Kopet Dag foothills are briefly green, and the ruins of Merv and Nisa can be walked at midday without suffering. Late April and May are the peak; book early.

Autumn — September to early November

Spring’s equal, with a different character: the light is lower and warmer, melons are at their absurd best, and the desert cools quickly after dark. Yangykala’s cliffs take colour beautifully in October. This is the photographer’s season.

Summer — late June to August

Genuinely hot: 40°C is ordinary, and the Karakum goes well beyond it. This does not make travel impossible, but it reshapes the day — you move early, rest through the afternoon, and see the monuments in the evening when Ashgabat’s marble turns gold. It is also the quietest season, and the cheapest.

Winter — December to March

Cold, clear and underrated. Ashgabat can freeze, and the desert nights are sharp, but the air is the cleanest of the year and the Darvaza crater against a black winter sky is unforgettable. Snow on the ruins of Merv is a sight almost no visitor sees.

Choosing by what you came for

• Ancient cities (Merv, Nisa, Kunya-Urgench): spring or autumn — you will be walking, exposed, for hours.
• The Darvaza crater: any season. Autumn and winter give the sharpest night skies.
• Yangykala canyon: October for colour; April for green foreground.
• Akhal-Teke horses and the spring festival: late April.
• Photography: autumn, then winter.
• Fewest other travellers: summer and midwinter.

One honest caveat

Turkmenistan is never crowded. Even in peak season you will have Merv largely to yourself. Season here changes your comfort and your light — not your queueing. Choose for the light.
