Do you need a visa for Turkmenistan? A practical guide

Almost every visitor to Turkmenistan needs a visa, and — unlike most countries — you cannot simply apply for one yourself. A tourist visa is issued only against a Letter of Invitation (LOI) approved by the State Migration Service, and only a licensed Turkmen operator can request that letter on your behalf.

The two-step process

• Your operator applies for a Letter of Invitation. Approval typically takes several weeks, so start early — this is the step that decides your dates.
• With the approved LOI, you collect the visa on arrival at Ashgabat airport (or at a consulate, if you prefer). A consular fee is paid at that point.

What can go wrong

The single most common mistake is booking international flights before the invitation is approved. Approvals are usually granted, but the timing is not in anyone’s control, and a rigid flight date can turn a small delay into a lost trip. Book flexible fares, or wait for the letter.

Transit visas

A short transit visa exists for travellers crossing the country overland. It is issued at the discretion of the authorities, cannot be relied upon, and does not permit a leisurely itinerary. If you actually want to see Turkmenistan, travel on a tourist visa.

Independent travel

Tourist visas require an accompanying licensed guide for the duration of your stay. This is not a formality that can be waived. In practice it is also the reason travellers see so much: permits for Darvaza, Merv and the border regions are arranged in advance, and the queues you would expect simply do not exist.

A practical checklist

• Passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.
• Passport scan and a recent photograph for the invitation.
• Your intended arrival and departure dates — decided before the LOI is filed.
• Travel insurance (not included in tours, and worth having).
• Patience with timing; certainty about the itinerary.
