Drive to the UNESCO ruins of Old Nisa, royal seat of the Parthian Empire, then the earthquake-touched Seyit Jemaleddin mosque at Anau on the way back.

Underground lake
West of the capital, swim in the warm sulphur waters of the Kow-Ata underground lake, then pause at the white Gökdepe mosque, a national memorial.

Cross the Karakum into the open desert. Reach the burning Darvaza gas crater by late afternoon and camp beside it, watching the flames deepen as the stars come out.

Drive into the desert to Gonur-Depe, the 4,000-year-old capital of the Margiana civilisation — a palace, temples and royal necropolis excavated from the sand.
Return to Ashgabat
Gypjak & the capital
Fly back to Ashgabat. Visit the golden-domed Türkmenbaşy Ruhy mosque at Gypjak, then a relaxed final afternoon for museums, carpets or the Ashgabat cable car.
